I have seen that some temples have a toll road to access them. Is the toll meant only for cars, or should I pay it also if I use the road by bike?

The only temple with a toll road that I know of is Temple 60, Yokomineji. For cars, the cost is 1, 850 yen. I have no idea if they would charge a bicyclist, but would be surprised if they did. My guess is that they would tell you it is too dangerous for you to use, but waive you through if you insisted/begged.

My understanding is they have the charge to try and minimize the number of private cars using the road. The road is very, very narrow and winding so they want people to use buses that run up and down regularly.
