I'm starting my pilgrimage next month (may 4th) and plan on camping/staying in free lodgings as often as i can. If i were to bring a small alchohol stove or a canister stove what are the chances of being able to find fuel (e.g. ethanol, denatured alcohol, or fuel canisters) in the bigger cities around the island?

I wanted to do nearly the same but refrained from cooking. The convenience stores offer enough food to survive and they can heat things up for you  Smile  very convenient!
Plus a stove or whatever is maybe difficult to check-in on the plane

Have a nice trip! Ganbatte! Smile

MrPerry, did you bring the stove in the end? Would you recommend doing so? I was thinking of leaving it home, but if you recommend otherwise, I might reconsider.

I'd recommend a canister stove. The canisters are readily available in camping and hardware stores and I never had trouble finding them. Just remember to dispose of the last one before packing your gear if you're taking a plane home. I'm embarrassed to say I forgot to do that...and only in Japan will the security officer apologize to you profusely for making you unpack your bag... Smile
