I have about 16 days of walking time next Sept/Oct and would like to do part of the trail. Where should I start so that I get the most scenic part of the circuit and avoid as much bitumen as possible? Is it safe to walk alone for a middle aged woman. Have done many European Pilgrim trails and never had any problems. Rosie

It is completely safe to walk the henro path as a woman.
If you are willing to use a train/bus between clumps of temples, you could do a mountain temples sampler pilgrimage.
Here's the way you could do this:
#11 & #12
#18 through #22
#44 & #45
#60 - and then catch #61 - #64 which aren't far away
#65 day trip
#66 (use the ropeway to climb if time is limited; descend via trail) and #67 - take the bus back into town.
#80, #81, and #82
#87 and walk up to #88
You can fill in additional temples that you may be able to visit along the way between these.
