I took the ropeway down from temple 21 because I was staying at the in there and because my knees still did not enjoy going downhill. The main problem for walking henro is that the ropeway takes you quite far from the main henro route.

To my surprise, the ropeway staff, on seeing I was a walking henro, told me I could take a bus from the Wajiki Higashi bus stop near the ropeway station at the base of the mountain and get off at Yamaguchi-Naka (山口中 ). It is apparently in front of an elementary school (if I got my kanji right). From there, you take the road south, about 3km to temple 22. Unfortunately, this bus stop is past the limits of the guidebook map and I don't know if there are obvious signs leading to Temple 22 from there. However, the ropeway staff can provide a map and write details for you, including bus times.

Alternatively, the same bus route goes by the Asebi bus stop, which is both marked in the guidebook and is right on the main henro trail. From there, it's a little more than 5km to temple 22.
